MEPhI with the participation of leading experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) represents a course of lectures at universities of the international network STAR-NET

During the last three years, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI organizes and conducts lectures by leading experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for masters of engineering and physical specialties within the framework of the course «International Nuclear Cooperation. Technical aspects» developed at the Department №5 (Department of Theoretical and Experimental Physics of Nuclear Reactors). The goal of the course is to study the main approaches, mechanisms and means of international nuclear cooperation as a key resource in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Taking into consideration the great interest in the course from the partner universities of the regional network «Education and training of specialists in the area of nuclear technologies (STAR-NET)», it was decided to expand the audience of this course in the 2018/19 academic year, connecting interested universities to the video sessions to the STAR-NET network.

The lectures are held in the interactive mode of video conferences from STAR-NET headquarters (Vienna, Austria) in Russian and English and cover a number of topical issues of international cooperation in the field of nuclear technologies, such as:

  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA): goals, objectives, programs;
  • Nuclear non-proliferation regime;
  • Economics of nuclear power;
  • The information model of Nuclear power plant (NPP) and design data management;
  • The IAEA program on the development and implementation of standards (norms) on nuclear safety;
  • International sources of nuclear information;
  • Creation of national nuclear infrastructure for the first nuclear power plant;
  • Integrated control system for nuclear power facilities;
  • Nuclear fuel cycle;
  • Small and transported nuclear power plants;
  • IAEA software for modelling nuclear material flows in different fuel cycles;
  • IAEA activities in response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP: lessons learned;
  • International cooperation in the field of research reactors, the use of research reactors.

The course lectures are open to all partner universities of the STAR-NET network and will be held regularly. As a result of studying the course, students will gain an understanding of the international system of nuclear cooperation and IAEA activities, designed to serve as the world's leading forum of scientific and technical cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear technologies. With examples of cooperation in different areas will show how the results of international cooperation can be used in the practical activities of young professionals and how the resources of knowledge gained in international nuclear cooperation programmes can be used in practice.

The first lecture took place on September 13, 2018. At the same time there were universities of Minsk (BSUIR, BSU, BNTU), Moscow (NRNU MEPhI) and Odessa (ONPU). The lecture was devoted to the IAEA, its goals, objectives and programs. In total, the lecture was attended by over 60 students of different specialties related to the design and operation of nuclear facilities and facilities.

International Regional network «Education and training of specialists in the field of nuclear technologies (STAR-NET)» was created to develop, manage and preserve nuclear knowledge and provide qualified human resources in the nuclear field in the participating countries whose educational organizations participate in this network, as well as improving the quality of human resources for the safe and stable use of nuclear technologies. Currently, the network includes 13 partner universities from 7 countries.

The STAR-NET network effectively cooperates with the IAEA, complementing existing international initiatives, including those of the IAEA, and focusing on the education and training of specialists in the area of nuclear technologies and work with schoolchildren. The STAR-NET regional network used the positive experience of national and regional educational and knowledge networks, for example in Asia, Europe and Latin America.
