  • About the Institute

    INPhE conducts scientific research, the spectrum of which extends from the fundamental problems of the structure of matter and the development of new materials to the creation of a new nuclear power platform, and prepares specialists capable of solving the global problems of modern nuclear physics and the nuclear industry.
  • Opportunities

    Students are offered original educational programs reflecting the current state and trends in the development of science and technology, as well as the opportunity to participate in research in the fields of nuclear physics, elementary particles and cosmophysics and in developments of nuclear technologies, new materials and nuclear power plants. INPhE actively cooperates with leading foreign universities and international nuclear educational networks.
  • Advantages

    The Institute has the advantage of having its own unique scientific and technical base for research, as well as active participation in collaborations with leading international nuclear centers. This allowed developing new technologies for training personnel of various competences and skill levels directly in the process of conducting scientific research.
  • Experience

    INPhE includes the leading departments of the University, which have extensive experience in conducting research and training of students and graduate students in the field of nuclear technology, the development of new materials, cosmophysics and high-energy physics. Graduates of INPhE are in demand in Russian and international institutes and nuclear centers.

  • Global challenges

    Global challenges

    Researchers, teachers, students and graduates of the INPhE are searching for answers to the following global challenges facing the mankind:

    ● increasing rates of development of the world science in fields of particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics and condensed-matter physics;
    ● search for new forms of energy and creation of technologies for their developing;
    ● safe and ecologically clean nuclear energy;
    ● problem of nonproliferation of radioactive materials;
    ● strengthening of the mankind impact on the climate change;
    ● global competitive struggle for training of highly qualified personnel.
  • Main tasks

    Main tasks

    In the field of the research activity, the strategic task of the INPhE is to become a leading international research and engineering and technology center in such rapidly developing areas as: nuclear energy and radiation technologies, nuclear non-proliferation and guarantees, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, astrophysics and cosmophysics.

    The research potential of MEPhI in the nuclear field will sharply increase after the integration of the activity of INPhE and several research institutes of the nuclear industry, and creating, together with the State Corporation «Rosatom», of R&D center. In the field of education, INPhE pursues the strategic challenge of entering the elite group of the world's best universities in the field of nuclear physics and technology, material science and materials technology.

    The innovative demand for nuclear and subnuclear research lies, first of all, in the potential applicability of research outcome for the development of essentially new technologies. Second, technologies and equipment created for the investigation of physical phenomena at the limit of current capabilities can be further used in other science-intensive areas
  • Strategic aim

    Strategic aim

    The strategic aim is the creation and development of the world level scientific and educational center in the field of nuclear physics and technology, radiation materials science, elementary particle physics, astrophysics and cosmophysics.
    The strategy of the INPhE development is aimed to taking leading positions in the following areas:

    ● nuclear energy of the XXI century (multicomponent nuclear energy, closed fuel cycle, nuclear waste disposal, NPP safety);
    ● radiation and beam technologies (materials science, radiation physics, electronics, etc);
    ● high-energy physics and elementary particle physics, astrophysics and cosmophysics (new states of matter, ultrahigh-energy particles, spin and polarization effects, properties of neutrino, and gamma-ray astronomy);
    ● applied aspects of the solar-terrestrial physics, improving of methods for monitoring of potentially hazardous processes in the Earth's atmosphere and near-Earth space;
    ● new system of training of personnel for the science-intensive sectors of the economy/
  • Key strategic differentiators

    Key strategic differentiators

    ● Multidimensional mutually beneficial relations of the INPhE with international organizations IAEA and OECD/NEA;
    ● Developed own scientific and technological infrastructure providing effective integration of scientific and educational activities;
    ● Dominant positions of the INPhE in leading international scientific collaborations including MegaScience projects in Russia;
    ● Priority participation of the INPhE in international educational and scientific networks (ENEN, ANENT, STAR-NET, etc.);
    ● Investing in the creation of advanced educational programs and in the achievement of breakthrough scientific results.
